4. Eucalyptus or menthol

Eucalyptus or menthol oil can be used in a steam inhalation to relieve nasal and sinus congestion, draining mucus and relieving pressure. Menthol is derived from peppermint. It is a natural anesthetic, germicidal and the vapors arean incredible decongestant. Eucalyptus oil is a powerful antiseptic with antibacterial properties. To create an eucalyptus steam inhalation, pour some boiling water into a bowl and add 3 drops of eucalyptus oil. Look down, with your head over the bowl. Cover your head and bowl with a towel. Close your eyes and inhale the steam slowly for 10 minutes.

You can also put a few drops of eucalyptus on a handkerchief and sniff periodically.

Aromatic Gift Ideas-Simple Ideas For Homemade Potpourri Gifts

Fragranced gifts gifts are always popular and, with the wide availability of essential oils (natural oils obtained from plants), easy to make. Here are a few ideas for creative and individualized gifts that I have sourced from the Internet and other sources.

A pot of homemade potpourri makes an individual aromatic gift. Some of the recipes for homemade potpourri can be quite complex-the simplest I have come across is that by Jane Lake, and is given below, with a few amendments from me:

You will need a large clean storage jar with a close fitting lid, scissors/Clippers to cut an assortment of coloured and fragrant flowers or leaves as they appear in your garden, and a sunny window sill.

Suitable flowers including daffodils, lilyof the valley, violets, lavender, bleeding hearts, roses, geranium, honey suckle, sweet william, pansies, viola, veronica, phlox and clover. Simply cut a few blossoms off each flower when they arrive in the garden and add to the jar. The leaves of herbs, such as bay, rosemary, lemon balm and lemon grass can also be added-just before the harvest these plants come into full bloom as this is when they are most pungent and contain the greatest amount of natural essential oils.

To add a tang, you can also add the cut up dried peel of oranges, lemons and limes. If you have some eucalyptus that is past its prime, wash off the dust, pull off leaves, and add these leaves to your potpourri flower jar as well.

The drying process is simple ... you just let the blossoms dry out in the jarwith the aid of the sun shining through your window. Before you add more blossoms, stir the lower layers of potpourri with a kitchen fork or spoon, and add the new blossoms on top. Don't pack the blossoms and leaves down too tightly--you want plenty of air space to encourage quick and complete drying. You can mix and match your flowers-you might like to have one jar predominantly a Muslim of roses, or another packed with mostly lavender. You could also do one just with bay leaves-for cooking purposes.

The fun is in experimenting.

When the natural perfume of the flowers and leaves begin to fade, the potpourri can be refreshed easily by simply adding a few drops of essential oils. You could also supply a small bottle of oil as an essential part of your gift.

If youare unable to make your own potpourri, why not buy an unfragranced variety, put it in an attractive jar and add a few drops of essential oil? such as Lavender oil.

Alternatively, you could make potpourri sachets (see below)

Potpourri sachets

Fragranced gifts potpourri, whether homemade or store bought, can also be made into gift sachets. One way of doing this, avoiding any sewing, is to tie it up in cotton handkerchiefs.

Wash and iron the handkerchiefs. Pour about 1/2 cup of potpourri into the centre of the handkerchief. Gather up the ends and either wrap a rubber band around the part near the ball of sachet or tie it up with strong cotton. The sachet should be tightly enclosed. Tie a matching ribbon around the band, making a bow with longends. If you make the ribbon long enough, then it could be used to hang the sachet in a cupboard or wardrobe.

As an alternative to a handkerchief, you could use a square of muslin or any thin material, though you may need to hem the edges or trim them with ribbon or lace.

You could include a small bottle of essential oil with the sachet, for refreshing the potpourri once the fragrance begins to fade.

If you are unable to make your own potpourri, why not buy an unfragranced variety and simply add a few drops of essential oil?

Lavender bags

Always popular as drawer fragrancers, lavender bags can be made in the same way as the sachets described above.

Cut the stems of lavender just before the flowers start to open and hang them upside downfor a few days for them to dry before rubbing them down to remove the flowers. Once made, the bags should remain effective for 1-2 years.

The ideas listed here are not only fun to do, but also make ideal and, above all, individual gifts. So, give your friends an aromatic Christmas this year!

10 Easy Things to Make With a Serger

The greatest thing about serging is that it is fast and easy. Here are 10 projects you can easily make in under an hour. All of these projects would make excellent gifts but they are so useful and fun to make you will want to make them for yourself, too.

1. Napkins-Save a tree and add elegance to any dinner table by serging up a stack of these, finished in a couple of minutes each by using the rolled hem.

2. Handkerchiefs-Made in the same way as napkins, but use soft flannel, or try re-re-purposing old t-shirts, pajama pants, soft or anything else you might have in your scrap basket.

3. Tablecloths-I made a festive party tablecloth by cutting a red sheet to fit my table and then sergering all four sides with rainbow variegated thread.

4. BabyBlankets-If you use 2 layers of flannel, these are so much nicer than what they sell in the stores. This is probably the simplest, easiest baby gift you can make, but each one you make will be well used and loved.

5. Pillowcases-With one yard of fabric and about 10 minutes you can have custom bedclothes far more fabulous than what you will ever find for sale in the shops.

6. Designer Children's Clothes-YOU are the designer. You could make a dress for a little girl from a vintage pillowcase in half an hour. I made a t-shirt for my son using the good pieces from a stained pocket tee that originally belonged to his dad. I used blue thread and set the seams on the outside, quickly fused an applique cut from patterned fabric, and added the original pocket at the hip. Thishas become baby's favorite shirt because of the pocket, and we have received many compliments on the creative, exposed seams. Sergering the seams on children's clothes makes them more long lasting and hard wearing.

7. Patchwork, with a difference-This is another creative designing opportunity. Try making simple patchwork with the serger, and have some of the seams on the front side of the work. Quilts and bags made in this way are stunning and original.

8. Purse accessories-After you make your patchwork purse, fill it with a glasses case, wallet, checkbook covers, and more. You could probably complete the whole set within an hour.

9. Cloth baby diapers and wipes-There are lots of ways to make cloth diaper, but the easiest way is to make "flatfolds" by sergering layersof flannel together in a rectangle, which you will fold into thirds in the same way as you would a "prefold." You can easily find out the standard sizes of prefold through Google, though making your own means you can custom fit diapers for your child. I love to use wooly nylon in my loopers when serging diapers.

10. Curtains-These are greatly simplified by the serger; you can do rolled hemming on three sides in under 5 minutes. You can even attach a ruffle and gather in one fast pass through your machine. Combine these with easy serger patchwork, and you can make something custom and truly special to match any decor.
